The F1 Halo Saved Zhou Guanyu’s – FRR’s GT Podcast

F-R Racing's Garage Talk iRacing Podcast Logo

Since there was no official Wednesday Night Dash this week, we spent a large portion of the episode talking about the safety systems on F1 cars (the halo) and IndyCar (Aeroscreen). We talk about how they work, were heavily criticized initially, but have saved the lives of numerous drivers. This was a very educational experience for both D.J and Erik and we’re excited to share with you what we learned.

Episode 5 – The F1 Halo & IndyCar Aeroscreen

We didn’t have a Wednesday Night Dash officially this week, but we held an exhibition race at the new Atlanta Motor Speedway configuration. We talk about how that went, the amazing finish between Colton Gardner and Hunter Hughes, and how a couple of trolls tried to ruin the race at the start.

Next, we do a quick discussion of the NASCAR and IndyCar races last week at Road America and Mid Ohio before getting into the bulk of the discussion about the British Grand Prix and how the halo saved Zhou Guanyu’s life. We originally played and discussed the analysis of the crash, but YouTube didn’t like that so we cut that part out of the video. The discussion expands into the recent history of the halo used in F1, the lives it has saved already, and the similar IndyCar aeroscreen. We discuss the pros and cons of each and the issues they still face. We have video examples we play on our YouTube broadcast (or watch the videos individually linked below).

Finally, we close the show by talking about next week’s Wednesday Night Dash at Talladega. We’ll see you there!
