Napoleon Dynamite and Racing? F-R Racing Insider

From Formula 1 To Napoleon Dynamite

What does Napoleon Dynamite have to do with racing? Nothing at all, but somehow in protest of all the boring racing last weekend, Garage Talk got way off-topic this week and turned into a discussion about cult classic movies.

If you watched the racing over the weekend you were left pretty bummed out. Bristol was a bust, Long Beach IndyCar was pretty boring, Oscar Piastri ran away with the F1 race in Bahrain. The IMSA race at Long Beach was arguably the most compelling. Yet somehow we go way off course and spend probably more than half of our first-ever marathon episode discussing everything else. If you decide to skip this episode, we don’t blame you.

We kick off the show discussing Kyle Larson’s eye-opening comments about how he likes racing in the Xfinity Series so he can embarrass the drivers, but unlike some of the talking heads, we discuss the context around the clickbait headline and why it’s a good thing he “embarrasses the kids” and how it happened to him when he was a youngster in the series. We dig into the history books and look at some of the Busch/Nationwide/Xfinity Series drivers who were good or great in the series but never made it in the Cup Series.

Back On Topic

Next, we move on and discuss the drama with every team except for maybe Haas (weird, I know?) and after discussing where Max may end up next season we go off-topic for the bulk of the rest of the show. It starts off with Erik getting ready to celebrate his 40th birthday next week and a simple question is “Isn’t Happy Birthday To You” now in the public domain? Answer: It is as of 2015.

Do you know who else is in the public domain now? The original Winnie The Pooh led to a low-budget horror film involving Winnie the Pooh as the bad guy. In our now regular segment of TV and Movie updates, we talk about cult classics and movies that were terrible but we liked them anyway. Erik talks about “The Tree of Life” and D.J. mentions a movie of the old TV Show “McHale’s Navy” starring Tom Arnold, David Alan Grier, and the great Tim Curry.

After that, we do get back on the racing talk looking at the confirmed entry list for the 109th Indianapolis 500 and D.J. asks the question about why is there little to no marketing for the IMSA Series? Only 81000 people watched the Long Beach race on Saturday on USA and it’s mind-blowing that with Americans loving sports cars why they don’t market that to anyone?

Finally, we close out the show talking about D.J.’s car getting hit while stopped at a stop light last weekend. Everyone is fine and the car is mostly ok, but consider it a PSA about paying attention while driving.

Recent Race Results

Race: iRacing Daytona 24

Results: Erik Richardson, Hunter Hughes, Ian Miller, and Tyler Vickery ran in the GTP/Hypercar class for the first time in the Ferrari 499P. The real stars of the show was the rain and the new dynamic track debris system that created chaos all over the track. Numerous accidents led to a P9 in class (of 21) and P33 overall (of 58). We look to bounce back stronger at Sebring in March.
