Eriks Birthday Spectacular, IndyCar Testing, Magic The Gathering? | Garage Talk

Erik is 40 years old! On today’s episode officially dubbed as Erik’s Birthday Spectacular, we bring out our old friend Jeppson’s Malört, discuss the IndyCar testing Internet issues, and somehow finish off the show talking about Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons and Dragons.

Episode Guide

First, We kick off the show with our old friend Jeppson’s Malört as we celebrate Erik’s birthday (spoiler alert, we never ended up doing the second shot) and look at famous people with the same birthday as Erik. We then spin off and talk about D.J.’s copy of the 1998 Indianapolis 500 program and are reminded of a long time NASCAR driver who made his IndyCar debut that season.

Next, we talk about the testing at Indianapolis and how IndyCar ended up with egg on its faces because the pit lane couldn’t make an Internet connection and had no analytics data. Practice was held up for over two hours citing a “safety concern” which is fair, but it falls back on our discussion from last week about racing becoming too reliant on analytics and ultimately ruining the product some weeks.

Next, we talk about Rick Allen breaking his silence after his surprise exit from NASCAR and sharing his thoughts on the Dale Jr Download, Formula 1 having a hard time getting the price they want for a US TV deal. We dive into the future of live sports on tv and will this end up just driving more people to F1TV (our affiliate partner, see link below) if they can’t get the deal they want? NASCAR returned to Rockingham and we briefly discuss that.

Finally, somehow we get into the discussion of how we played Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons and Dragons as kids, get into our collections, and how D.J. regrets selling off his Magic: The Gathering collection as a teenager.

Recent Race Results

Race: iRacing Daytona 24

Results: Erik Richardson, Hunter Hughes, Ian Miller, and Tyler Vickery ran in the GTP/Hypercar class for the first time in the Ferrari 499P. The real stars of the show was the rain and the new dynamic track debris system that created chaos all over the track. Numerous accidents led to a P9 in class (of 21) and P33 overall (of 58). We look to bounce back stronger at Sebring in March.
